Water Sanitation - #SectorUpdates

Water & Sanitation sector in India includes ensuring adequate supply of water and treatment of liquid & solid waste. Government of India by launching Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) and National Rural Drinking Water Program (NRDWP) has made substantial investment and efforts in ensuring safe drinking water and sanitation. Gujarat has topped the Composite Water Management Index (CWMI) and Telengana ranked second in providing clean water and sanitation in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) India Index released by NITI Aayog. As per the market reports, by 2030, the country’s water demand is projected to be twice the available supply, implying severe water scarcity for hundreds of millions of people. Multiple micro irrigation companies have been set up with the initiative of State and Private Sector aiming at less water consumption in irrigation. This initiative will positively address the future water scarcity situation. The Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation administers programs for safe drinking water and sanitation in rural areas by allocating Rs 67,221 crore, accounting for 78% of the Ministry’s allocation in 2021 – 22 for further improvements in the sector.
