Indian leather industry holds a prominent position in the Indian economy with consistently high export earnings and acquiring a position among the top ten foreign exchange earners for the Country. Exports of leather and leather products are valued at $402.61 million in 2022 with a positive growth of 48.53% compared to 2021. During 2020 – 2022, FDI in the sector is accounted as $222.6 million with 100% FDI allowance in the sector on the part of the Government. Leather industry being a highly employment intensive sector provides 4.42 million jobs yearly, specifically in the weaker section of the country. Women employment in this industry is predominant consisting of 30% share of the total employment generated. Government of India has identified leather sector as one of the major focus area in Make in India initiative creating distinct cells to guide & facilitate investors & individual firms on their FDI & Joint Venture proposals.
