Manufacturing - #SectorUpdates
India is the fifth largest furniture producer at a global level and the fourth largest consumer of furniture. Currently India’s top export destination includes US, Germany, France, UK, Netherlands and Australia. The countries from where India primarily imports are China, Malaysia and Italy. The Government of India is considering a Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for certain types of furniture to boost domestic manufacturing and exports and create jobs in the sector. The objective of the scheme is to make domestic manufacturing globally competitive and to create global champions in manufacturing. There is already an established competitiveness in the moulded furniture sector and the PLI scheme can be a game changer for the sector. A furniture cluster can also give a fillip to this sector.
