Poultry and meat - #SectorUpdates
India has highly integrated poultry industry that matches the western countries containing world’s largest livestock population. India is the third largest egg and fifth largest poultry producer in the world. Major states contributing in this sector are West Bengal, UP, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Haryana and Tamil Nadu. Annually India produces 5.3 MT meat and 75 billion eggs. India’s current processing level in poultry and for meat are 6% and 21% respectively. India exports meat to 70 countries. Indian buffalo meat is majorly exported to Vietnam, Malaysia, Egypt Arab Republic, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia comprising of 89.08% of India’s animal products export. As per 19th Livestock Census 30 million farmers are engaged in backyard poultry. This sector has huge opportunity of generating decent amount of employment in rural areas and most importantly for women bringing a desired socio – economic reform in the country. Government of India has allowed 100% FDI and imposed concessions on customs duty to benefit imports in the sector. A fund of 20 billion has been created with NABARD with an aim to extend affordable credit to designated Food Parks operated under Mega Food Park Scheme initiated by Government of India.
