Defence - #SectorUpdates
As part of the efforts to achieve self-reliance in Defence manufacturing and minimize imports by the Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs), a positive indigenisation list has been notified by the Defence Ministry. The list includes 2,500 imported items that have already been indigenized and 351 high-value imported items which will be indigenised in the next three years. Out of 351 items, 147 items have already been indigenised. India has been the biggest importer of arms globally in 2017-2021. This exhibits the potential for the development of the indigenous defence manufacturing industry. The five largest arms importers worldwide during 2017-21 were India, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Australia, and China, while the five biggest exporters of arms in the same period were the United States, Russia, France, China, and Germany. India can try to find an export market in the other arms importing countries after meeting its own demand.
